Asa is undoubtedly one of the most talented artists to ever grace the industry.

Her folk and rock-inspired alternative sound has become kind of legendary, since the days she was just a little girl on her eponymous debut album, “Asa.”

The thing about what Asa does is that nobody can do it better. Pick up a guitar and lace some ultra-lyrical stuff on bland acoustic instrumental, with simple melodies that just stick. Asa is good at what she does and there are simply no questions about that.

But her time has come and gone. 2007 is already almost a decade and a half. That’s a long time to have heat, fall off, stay relevant, get more heat, fall off again, and just go under the shadows. Asa has done her bit, and now everything she does is either her having fun with her music or trying her hands something else.

That’s why a project like her latest, “V” which signaled her transition to Afrobeats didn’t come as a surprise. But to be honest, not so many people are feeling Asa’s Afrobeats though. For one, it’s a complete deviation from what Asa is known for.

The whole thing makes her sound like she doesn’t know what she’s doing, like she’s new to this. But that’s exactly what she is, a newcomer to afro-pop. She might have enjoyed some mainstream attention when being a soul girl with a guitar was cool. But she’s not really getting any buzz right now. Not that she needs it, but if she’d be doing the music, she can as well stay relevant, right?

Her previous album before this, “Lucid,” released in 2019, wasn’t as buzzworthy as her three previous efforts.

So, what Asa is doing is putting herself back on the radar by doing what will manage to get people to talk, listen, and with tracks like “IDG” with WizKid, maybe she can make a mark on the charts too. She’s just trying to do more.

The album “V” is a testament to this ‘more’ she could do. Whether or not this is good or bad for her career is up for debate. But so far, what Asa has done is good enough. It might not fit into the expectations, but that doesn’t mean it is bad. Maybe it’s a little weird, but we’ll just have to get used to it.
